Johan Janssen’s Letter to the Joomla Community

At the JoomlaDay Espain Johan Janssens, the Joomla! Co-Founder and former 1.5 Lead Developer puts out some very important reminders:

“An open source project is about people producing free and open software and contributing to something as a team for the benefit of others.”

“Open source projects reflect the spirit of collaboration and fun while garnering community feedback and providing good governance that allows for business to confidently invest in its development.”

“Open source projects are open to the participation of anybody who can contribute value and is willing to work with the community.”

and my most favorite of all:

“As individuals we’re all pretty good but as a collective, we’re amazing!”

Evolution Of Websites

Identifying different types of websites still remains to be a mystery to many. Throughout our consulting sessions we have learned that some confusions still exists amongst the business owners or even marketing and PR people who often play the role of educators to their clients.

A lot of today’s successful websites are powered by software and developed by software developers and not by static pages published by web designers and web design companies. That might be the clue to why your last website project that was put together by your favorite design and marketing firm looked so visually stunning but failed to perform as it should have!

Understanding the nature of your Internet project and knowing the evolutionary stage that it is standing in,  will put you in the right direction in choosing the type of talents and teams that you will be involving with your next website project.

Evolution of the Web

This diagram shows the evolution of Internet websites from static HTML pages all the way up to the social web. Charles Darwin would have been so proud of this!

Lose the Feature-List And Start Experiencing

When we go around looking for something or someone solely based on the list of required features in our hands, we are still missing a whole lot of information that contribute to our success. I mean it is quite possible to end up dating a yellow baboon! After all she has beautiful blonde hair, big brown eyes, a big smile, prefers a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables; she is none-smoking, funny and very cuddly. Who wouldn’t want to take this young lady out for a dinner based on those descriptions?

In reality many of those who shop around based on a list of features, do in fact end up cuddling with the yellow monkey instead!

It is the quality of experience, context, and the philosophy behind something or someone’s personality that defines an ideal match. One reason behind the success of Apple products, Skype, or Facebook is the rich user experience and the difference that they make in our day-to-day life. Successful business partners or romantic partners do not recruit each other and instead attract each other in so many different levels.

So stop asking questions and start experiencing!
